In many Facilities Management departments the interaction with building information data tends to be a linear process. It is often created when needed at the start of the project, possibly by the supplier as part of their remit and therefore not necessarily returned at the end of the project or updated with the completed project’s details.

How to create, use and reuse your data

Interaction with your building information data needs to be turned into a continuous cycle, where data is reused and updated, rather than recreated; you will embrace a much more efficient process.
For this to work you need three essential elements.
The data must be:

  • accessible to those who need it (Common Data Environment)
  • created and stored in a standardised, logical and structured method (Information Standards)
  • accurate and kept as up to date as possible (Information Exchange and 3D Surveys)

In a nutshell this is BIM Level 2 for Facilities Management, where your building information data is accessed via a Common Data Environment in conjunction with your standardised method and procedures for accessing and using the data.

This cycle can start at the point of handover, for a new building, a maintenance project or a building acquisition.
